HISTORY OF THE FESTIVAL

In 2009 it became evident that there was a need for structured spaces that would welcome and integrate the growing colombian violist community and from this necessity the interuniversity viola festival of bogota was born (known today as the interviola festival of bogota). Work began on the festival with the goal of offering a variety of workshops dealing with topics that are both practical and conceptually enriching for violists such as: orchestral repertoire selection, interpretation, instrument maintenance and repair, body mechanics awareness to improve technique and avoid injury, stage presence and etiquette, baroque style performance practices, and more. Along with the workshops, the festival has offered lecturesand master classeswith both local and international guests as well asconcert performances in some of bogota’s most renowned stages. Since its inception the festival has taken place biennially in the conservatory of the national university of colombia.

The interviola festival has led to the creation of the viola orchestra which at present has more than sixty members comprised of professional violists, conservatory and university graduates, professors, educators, and students from all of colombia. This is the only such viola orchestra in all of latinamerica.

Throughout the history of the festival there have been many children who have displayed a solid interest for the viola and it became evident that there needed to be programs aimed specifically towards young musicians. This year we are proud to announce the creation of the viola youth orchestra to meet those needs.

It is also worth noting that the festival invites a young colombian violist currently studying abroad to come and work with our youth programs and as our invited guest concertmaster for the viola orchestra.
